Experience
I have been practicing psychiatry for over 30 years and have worked in a variety of settings. I am Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. Most recently, I was the Chief Medical Officer at the Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers where I provided oversight of medical staff, engaged in both direct clinical care as well as executive functions and community outreach. I was the Behavioral Medical Director at the Suburban Hospital, worked as a psychiatrist dealing with forensic issues at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center and worked as a community psychiatrist in DC on a crisis team. I also have training and provided ECT and Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS) services to patients. I have worked as a medical journalist. I have maintained a private practice over the years.
Education
I earned my M.D. and Ph.D. at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. I completed psychiatric residencies in both Brazil and at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as well as a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I am a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. I trained many medical and psychiatric residents, medical students and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
